Enhancing And Growing The Leadership And Capability Skill Sets Of Cricket South Africa’s Elite Coaches
Awaneo, through the Clifton Strengths Programme and expert guidance from Garreth Ewing, has helped CSA’s coaches become better leaders by focusing on their strengths. This initiative not only champions their abilities but also challenges them to deliver exceptional results in their coaching roles.
Overview: Launched in June 2023, the ‘Coach the Coaches’ initiative was a collaborative development program between Awaneo and Cricket South Africa (CSA). It aimed to empower six of CSA’s elite coaches by enhancing their coaching capabilities through the Clifton Strengths Programme under the guidance of specialist mentor and performance coach, Garreth Ewing. This performance-based tool helps individuals understand and leverage their unique skills, using an assessment to focus on identifying and building on innate strengths rather than improving weaknesses.
Player development: The ‘Coach the Coaches’ program builds on a previous initiative by Awaneo that successfully advanced the careers of aspiring cricketers, including Women’s T20 International player of the year Nonkululeko Mlaba, who is currently ranked the second-best bowler in the world in the shortest format.
The focus shifted from players to coaches to enhance the overall talent pool in South African cricket by improving coaching capabilities. Strength-based coaching aims to provide meaningful, result-driven guidance, helping coaches maximize their players' potential.
This initiative supports CSA’s vision of establishing a world-class coaching structure with highly qualified personnel to ensure a high-performance environment within South Africa’s first-class professional teams.
